Disabled access

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the British Embassy are keen to ensure that their buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public.

Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people.

To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at the British Embassy.

We hope this information is helpful.

General physical access
  • Entrances - at the main entrance security guards control the main gate and barriers to vehicles and they will facilitate clear and unobstructed access for disabled persons into the Embassy compound. Once inside the compound, access to the Visa Section is clear & unobstructed with a door wide enough for wheelchairs. Access to other Sections - including those on the ground, first and second floors - is via the lift (which is suitable for wheelchairs) from the basement. This facilitates easy access to the internal entrances to the Consular and Trade/Investment Sections.
  • Parking - spaces with full transfer space for wheelchairs are available near the main entrance.
  • Toilets - toilets are located in both the Consular/Visa and Trade/Investment Sections on each floor.
  • Floors - the main reception and Consular/Visa reception areas have marble floors. In the main offices, floors are carpeted safely and evenly.
  • Steps and staircases - access to the main reception area is via five non-slip granite steps. The main internal staircase is of marble.
  • Doors - internal doors, including fire doors, are not easily accessible to all users but every assistance will be given to those who are likely to experience difficulty.
  • Lighting - all parts of the building are well lit.
  • Emergency/evacuation - priority will be given to assisting disabled visitors to evacuate the building in the event of any emergency or evacuation.
  • Telephones - the phone outside the Consular/Visa Section receptions is accessible to wheelchair users.

Access for visually-impaired visitors
  • Signs - are clear and easy to read and use internationally-recognisable symbols. Braille is not available.

Access for deaf/hard-of-hearing visitors
  • Hearing loops-are not installed.
  • Minicom and textphones - are not installed.
  • Sign language - there are no staff with sign language skills.
  • Interpretation - professional signing interpretation is not available.
